The Whitehall Lane Reserve cabernet outscored a pair of surprising wines to win our July 8, 2004 tasting for 2001 California cabernet sauvignons and blends. A newcomer, the Stewart Estates cabernet, came in second, and a highly acclaimed, but low-priced, ringer, the 2002 Hahn Estate Meritage, finished third. The Hahn has picked up the most awards of any red wine at the various competitions around the nation so far this year. It is a bargain at $9.99. The competition at this tasting was intense, with four wines getting first-place votes. The Whitehall Lane got only one first, but several seconds and thirds. The controversial Ramey, Jericho Canyon (WA 97, WS 88) came in fourth.
